AI has made writing enterprise software dramatically faster — and quietly moved the hard problem downstream. The question facing engineering leaders is no longer whether AI can generate code; we now must ask: can AI deliver production-ready quality for enterprise-class software? And can agentic AI replace production-readiness validation for these complex, distributed systems and services?
The short answer is that AI has become a powerful amplifier of quality work — test generation, coverage, triage, fault injection, anomaly detection — but it cannot yet own the judgment of whether a system is fit for production. For enterprise-class systems, that limit is structural, not a maturity gap the next Frontier model closes. I’ll make the case for why, then I will share a practical model for where AI should be applied that’s earned through evidence rather than assumed from hype.
Questions we can use for discussion
- How are you measuring success for using AI in your engineering?
- What net gain is your company observing from using AI in your product development?
- Have your production-readiness criteria changed since adopting AI? How?
- Has your QE capacity actually scaled with your AI-accelerated code volume?
- What “evidence” do you require to allow agentic AI to made decisions without review?
